Lokpal Standing Committee: Manish opts out

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IBNS) Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Parliament which will soon review the Lokpal Bill, has decided to recuse himself from the panel in the interest of a strong and non-controversial anti-corruption ombudsman law.

"I support a strong and effective Lokpal Bill. There should not be even a shadow of controversy over the deliberations on this important piece of legislation. So I thought that in the best interest of everyone I should recuse myself," said Tiwari.

A soft-spoken Tiwari said he came across some adverse media reports about his presence in the panel and hence took the decision.
Tiwari had attacked Anna Hazare as a party spokesperson of Congress and accused the Gandhian activist of indulging in corruption himself, but later apologized for his remarks and withdrew them.
He said some of his utterances were hurtful and "I regret the same"., though Anna group is planning to sue him for his remarks.
Anna group had objected to the presence of Tiwari, RJD leader Lalu Yadav and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in the Standing Committee on Law and Justice, the term of which is ending on Aug 31.
It will be reconstituted early September and the present chairman Abhishek Manu Singhvi is likely to continue as the head.
The standoff between the government and Anna Hazare, who was on an indefinite fast, came to an end on Aug 28 when a united Parliament after accepted the three demands of the civil society led by Hazare-- bringing lower bureaucracy under the Lokpal's ambit, establishing Lokayuktas in states and formulating a citizens' charter.
The Standing Committee will review the Lokpa Bill and its various versions.
